Ancient egypt
(Outreach)
Our trained Education team can visit your school and bring the magic of the museum with them. Throughout the day children will get the opportunity to do three different activities linking to our collections and investigating artefacts.
There are 5 sessions available. We can work with you to pick the 3 that will work best with your pupils, curriculum and the spaces available.
SESSION 1: Q & A with marianne Brocklehurst
Marianne Brocklehurst was a Victorian explorer from Macclesfield who collected the Ancient Egyptian collection displayed at the Silk Museum.
Prior to the visit, Marianne Brocklehurst will send a letter to the class introducing herself. During the session, Marianne will discuss her life and encourage the children to ask her about her experiences and the artefacts she collected. She will bring a number of props / replica artefacts to support her answers.
This session acts as an introduction to the collection at the Silk Museum and puts the other sessions into context.
SESSION 2: uncovering the secrets of the mummy case
There is a mummy case in the Silk Museum. During this session the students will reproduce the research that has been taken on the mummy case by archaeologists to establish who it was made for, when and how. This includes translating hieroglyphs from the mummy case.
SESSION 3: mummification
This immersive session will see the group work to mummify our dolls. This includes considering the reasons for each stage in the process and the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians.
SESSION 4: comparative study of ancient civilisations
How did life in Ancient Britain compare to Ancient Egypt? Using artefacts students will consider the importance of geography and available materials on beliefs, society and everyday life. The session concludes with a guided story which will encourage the children to use their senses to imagine themselves in Ancient Britain and Ancient Egypt.
SESSION 5: scarab pectoral craft
In this session the children are introduced to Tutankhamun’s scarab pectoral and the meaning behind the symbols. They then design their own pectorals considering the skills and strengths needed to be pharoah.
