Schools

Visit us

We offer a range of different experiences for schools. We strongly recommend a visit to really enhance classroom-based learning.  A visit to the Silk Museum gives children the opportunity to handle artefacts, get creative, develop question asking skills and explore the collections with our costumed interpreters.

Schoolchildren in Victorian dress listen to museum worker

Victorian Experience

What would life have been like for a child living in Victorian Macclesfield? This visit covers all areas of Victorian life - work, school and home. Children dress up before heading to work in the mill. They get creative in a rag rug making workshop. In the object handling session they explore home and school life with costumed interpreters.

Silk weaving looms

Silk Industry

On this visit students will tour Paradise Mill and find out about working conditions for Macclesfield mill workers. An object handling session explores the process of silk production further and the equipment used. Children do some weaving in the classroom and can take their small woven material home.

Child experiencing the smell of Ancient Egypt from a box

Ancient Egypt

Who was Marianne Brocklehurst? How did Macclesfield come to have an Ancient Egyptian collection? On this visit children will make an Anubis headdress, play games with replica artefacts and tour the exhibition with a costumed interpreter.

Loan Boxes

Let young people engage their senses by handling artefacts, creating a memorable experience without visiting the museum. The loan boxes are themed around Ancient Egypt, the Victorians, the Silk Industry and World War II.
